The Strength Of Stronger Team

The Proper Condition
(Submitted By: Malek Williams)

In today's basketball society, athletic training and conditioning plays an essential role in a team's build and their drive to succeed. Coming out of Washington, D.C. Blair O' Donovan; head strength and conditioning coach of Gonzaga College High School, has used his interesting and creative techniques to help athletes excel in their fitness. What athletes tend to lack, is the proper way to train and get their bodies in the necessary shape to be a healthier and more efficient player. Personally experiencing Coach Blair's training was a great experience, watching the four year process of becoming physically stronger and having the upper hand on less-conditioned opponents was very important in shaping my own basketball game. Another example of Blair's work was a section of his training called "Can He Dunk" when he begins with a basketball player who is not able to dunk and takes them through a vertical workout program and then tests them by the end of the episode and shows them being able to dunk. With this great idea, it supported his craft and how effective it really is. In the picture below from Gonzaga College High School's Hoop Mania event, guard Charles Glover, who participated in "Can He Dunk" puts one down in front of the home crowd.

So, Basketball Minds spoke with Charles about his experience.

Q:Did you enjoy "Can You Dunk" and how do you think it improved your game?
A: Can u dunk was a great experience to improve my vertical and to be able to dunk the ball. It had many benifits such as improve my vertical and help my lower body get stronger.

Along with Coach Blair's help at the High School level, another great opportunity he captured was to work with strength and conditioning in the Nike All-Asia Camp. Not only was he working with Elite "on the rise" athletes, he also trained and conditioned such professional players as: Greivis Vasquez, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, and also trained in the LeBron James Skills Academy and the Steve Nash Skills Academy.

As well as teaching and assisting the pros, Coach Blair will aways know how to fundamentally condition kids to grow into well rounded in-shape athletes.
